Fillings, Root Canals

I had a painful tooth that I thought might be developing into an abscess and I wanted an English speaking dentist in Puglia. Dr Gaetani's details appeared on this site and I telephoned his office. He listened to my symptoms and when I told him I would be passing through Lecce in two days time he said that although he had no appointments available that day if I arrived at his surgery in the evening before he closed he would see me for a brief review. He was most professional, examining me quickly took digital dental x-rays and said that in his opinion there was an infection and that the tooth required root canal treatment and that it would be better not waiting 14 days for my return to England because of the risk of the infection worsening and possible attendant severe pain. He explained what the treatment would entail, that the tooth only had one root that he regularly performed the proposed endodontic treatment and warned me of possible post treatment pain. His surgery seemed to have modern up-to-date equipment and pleasant but not excessively luxurious waiting facilities indicating he was spending his money on what matters for dental patients. Because he exuded quiet expertise and confidence and his advice and diagnosis seem to consistent with the UK NHS Direct website, I decided to entrust my first experience of root canal treatment to him and took the first available hour long apointment three days later. When I turned up he apologized for keeping me waiting 10 minutes quite something in Italy where a wait is the norm. He said he thought that the tooth was such that it would be better to perform the endodontic treatment without local anaesthetic as he thought it would be unlikely that I would feel any material pain and it was better to proceed without anaesthetic in this case--but an anaesthetic was on offer at any stage if I indicated that I needed it. As a non expert the procedure seemed to me to be performed carefully and well with Dr Gaetani providing a clear sucsynced running commentary as he carried out the procedure. He said the temporary filling he put in would be good for at least a number of months and made suggestions for what my dentist in London should do to complete the treatment but emphasized it will be down to my London dentist to advise on filling permanently a crown or another alternative. He charged by english standard a very fair €190 for the two appointments and pre and post treatment x-rays which he emailed to me within two days for me to forward on to my dentist on my return to London. I felt some post treatment pain for a mere 12 hours but it did not require pain relief. If ever I need root canal treatment again I am tempted to go back to Lecce to see Dr Gaetani! As a non medical retired professional I have nothing but praise for the service I received from Dr Gaetani First rate
