The oil produced by these glands is brought to the surface of the skin through small channels which open on the outer surface of the skin in the form of pores. If these pores get blocked due to some underlying abnormality, it can lead to the formation of acne. The blockage may be a result of excessive oil production by the gland, accumulation of the dead skin cells in the pores or residing bacteria known as Propionibacterium Acnes in the affected area.
